- ~208,000 Rwandans (about 1.5% of the population) own crypto (Triple-A)
- 96% of adults are financially included and digital-service use jumped from 30% to 73% in four years (NBR)
- Diaspora remittances doubled to about US$0.52 billion since 2018 (World Bank)
- 5.8 million people use mobile money; Rwanda is running a central-bank digital currency pilot
Rwanda has built one of Africa’s most cashless economies, and that is the backdrop to its crypto story. 96% of adults are financially included, digital payments are worth several times GDP, and the central bank is piloting a digital currency. Only about 208,000 people (1.5%) hold crypto today — but in a country this digital, the rails for it already exist.
The numbers

Why crypto adoption is rising in Rwanda
Rwanda’s crypto demand grows out of a deliberate cashless push, not a currency crisis. The Rwandan franc is comparatively managed, so this is a payments-and-savings story. With 96% of adults financially included and digital-service use leaping from 30% to 73% in four years, the population is unusually ready for digital assets.
In December the country launched eKash, a national instant-payment system linking banks, fintechs and mobile-money operators, and the National Bank of Rwanda is running a 12-month central-bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot — partly to break the MTN–Airtel mobile-money duopoly and push fees down. Most Rwandans who buy crypto fund it from MTN MoMo or Airtel Money. Crypto is not yet formally licensed, but it is not banned either.
