Key stats you can cite (free to use with a link)
- ~480,000 Cameroonians (about 1.8% of the population) own crypto (Triple-A)
- MTN MoMo and Orange Money run more than 15 million accounts between them
- Diaspora remittances roughly doubled to about US$0.69 billion by 2024 (World Bank)
- The central bank (BEAC) bars financial institutions from crypto and is pushing a digital CFA franc
Cameroon shows that crypto can grow even without a currency crisis. The CFA franc is pegged to the euro and inflation stays in the low single digits, so this is a mobile-money and remittances story. Around 480,000 people (1.8%) own crypto, riding on top of a mobile-money base of more than 15 million accounts — and they do so despite an openly hostile central bank.
The numbers

Why crypto adoption is rising in Cameroon
Cameroon is a mobile-money market with a regulatory twist. MTN MoMo and Orange Money dominate everyday payments, and the diaspora — mostly in France, Belgium and Germany — sends home a rising stream of remittances. Because the CFA franc is euro-pegged and stable, demand is driven by cheap transfers and savings access rather than hedging.
The friction comes from the regulator. The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) has barred financial institutions from dealing in crypto and is instead backing a sovereign digital CFA franc to keep dollar stablecoins out. Cameroon has no dedicated crypto law, and the 2026 Finance Law did not criminalise individual ownership but tightened reporting around it. Most users buy peer-to-peer, funding wallets from MTN MoMo or Orange Money.
