Bitget P2P is how most Rwandans convert MTN Mobile Money into USDT and back, which makes it the go-to route for P2P crypto in Rwanda. Here is a complete guide to finding merchants, reading spreads, avoiding scams, and selling back to MoMo when you need cash.
Note: Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) and Airtel Money are the primary mobile payment methods used for P2P crypto trading in Rwanda.
How Bitget P2P Works in Rwanda
Bitget P2P connects buyers and sellers directly. The exchange holds USDT in escrow during the transaction. You pay the seller via MTN MoMo. Once you upload payment proof and they confirm receipt, USDT releases to your account.
No bank required. MTN MoMo to USDT in 10-20 minutes.
Finding MTN MoMo Merchants
- Log in to Bitget and go to Buy Crypto then P2P Trading
- Select USDT in the asset dropdown
- In the payment method filter, select MTN MoMo
- A list of active merchants sorted by price appears
Filter settings: Completion rate 95% or higher. Trades: 50 or more. Release time: under 15 minutes.
Rwanda P2P spreads typically run 2-4% above market. Anything above 5% is overpriced.
How to Sell USDT for MTN MoMo
- Go to P2P Trading and click the Sell tab
- Select USDT, payment MTN MoMo
- Choose a buyer with 95% or higher completion rate
- Place sell order. Your USDT goes into escrow.
- Buyer sends MTN MoMo to your number
- Verify the MoMo payment has arrived in your wallet
- Confirm receipt. Your USDT releases to the buyer.
Never release USDT until you have confirmed the MTN MoMo payment has actually arrived in your wallet.
Handling Disputes
- Click Appeal inside the order window before the timer expires
- Upload your MTN MoMo payment screenshot as evidence
- Bitget resolves within 15-60 minutes
- With clear payment proof, you almost always win
For regulatory context, see the National Bank of Rwanda.
Where Bitget P2P Stands in Rwanda Right Now
Before I show you a single MoMo trade, you need the lay of the land here, because Rwanda changed under everyone’s feet this year. On 28 May 2026 the Law on Virtual Asset Business was published in the Official Gazette, putting the Capital Market Authority (CMA) in the driver’s seat alongside the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR). It’s blunt: virtual assets are not legal tender, only incorporated and licensed entities may run a virtual asset service, and stablecoins pegged to the franc are banned outright. When I fund a Bitget → P2P order from my MTN MoMo wallet, I’m trading peer-to-peer in a grey zone the regulator is still building rules around, not on a BNR-supervised rail.
That grey zone got teeth in April. After Bybit added the Rwandan franc to its P2P board on 2 April 2026, the BNR fired back days later in early April 2026, reminding everyone the franc is Rwanda’s sole legal tender and that anyone facilitating FRW-linked P2P trades “does so with no legal protection and no avenue for recourse in the event of a loss.” Bitget’s escrow holds the USDT while my counterparty sends RWF, which protects the coin side, but the cash leg moving through MTN MoMo or Airtel Money is mine to police. So I treat KYC as my real shield: I verify with my NIDA ID, only accept merchant payments that match the trader’s verified name, and screenshot every MoMo confirmation. The most common loss here isn’t a hacked exchange, it’s a reversed mobile-money transfer or a “wrong number” MoMo prompt after release. Whatever profit you take, the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) still expects you to declare income, and you can read the BNR’s own stance via the National Bank of Rwanda.
