Senegal’s crypto story is not about a collapsing currency — the CFA franc is pegged to the euro and stable. It is about money on the move. The diaspora sends home more than US$3 billion a year, worth over a tenth of the economy, and almost everyone already pays with a phone. Around 230,000 people (1.3%) hold crypto today, but they sit on top of one of Africa’s most mobile-money-ready populations.

Why crypto adoption is rising in Senegal

Unlike Zimbabwe or Nigeria, Senegal is not a currency-hedge story. The CFA franc is pegged to the euro, so people are not fleeing a falling currency. The pull is remittances and cheap mobile payments. Senegal receives more than US$3 billion a year from its diaspora — over 10% of GDP — and stablecoins let families cut the 2–3% fees that Wave and Orange Money International still charge on those transfers.

The on-ramp is already there. More than 90% of adults hold a mobile-money wallet — led by Wave, whose flat near-1% fees made it the most-used app, with Orange Money close behind — while only about a quarter have a bank account. In September 2025 the regional central bank, the BCEAO, switched on PI-SPI, a zone-wide instant-payment system linking every wallet and bank in the eight WAEMU countries. The BCEAO has not made crypto legal tender, and has warned about its risks, but it has not banned ownership or trading. Most Senegalese who buy crypto fund their account straight from a Wave or Orange Money wallet.
