Welcome! I am Kojo - your Africa crypto guide. These are the articles our readers find most valuable. Start here.
  • ~220,000 Zambians (about 1% of the population) own crypto (Triple-A)
  • Inflation hit 22% in 2021 and was back near 15% in 2024 (IMF / World Bank)
  • Diaspora remittances have roughly tripled since 2019, to about US$0.33 billion (World Bank)
  • The Bank of Zambia stays cautious, issuing Currency Directives in 2025 to defend the kwacha

Zambia’s crypto demand is tied to a wobbling kwacha. Inflation jumped to 22% in 2021 and is back in the mid-teens, so dollar stablecoins are a way for some Zambians to protect what they earn. Around 220,000 people (about 1%) hold crypto — a modest base, but one that grows whenever the currency comes under pressure.

The numbers

Zambia inflation rate by year
Double-digit inflation in most recent years is the core driver of hedging.
Zambia diaspora remittances by year
Diaspora remittances have roughly tripled since 2019.

Why crypto adoption is rising in Zambia

Zambia sits between two of the engines we see across Africa: a currency hedge motive and a mobile-money base. The kwacha has lost ground under import and energy pressure, and inflation has stayed in double digits, so USDT and other stablecoins appeal to savers. At the same time, mobile money makes on-ramping easy.

The official line is cautious. The Bank of Zambia has warned that crypto is not legal tender for payments, while the securities regulator has been testing supervisory technology and a framework for digital assets. In December 2025 the central bank issued Currency Directives to strengthen use of the kwacha and assert currency sovereignty. Most Zambians who buy crypto do so peer-to-peer, funding from mobile money.
