The first thing I tell anyone buying USDT here is to forget about your bank. Because COBAC has instructed every bank, microfinance institution and payment provider across the CEMAC zone to stay away from crypto, you simply cannot wire FCFA from a UBA or Afriland account to an exchange. That is why almost every real trade in Douala, Yaoundé or Buea runs through MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) or Orange Money on a P2P desk. On Bybit → P2P I filter buyers by “MTN MoMo,” pick a merchant with a high completion rate, send the FCFA from my MoMo line, and the USDT releases from escrow once they confirm. No bank ever touches it.
Reading the price is where Cameroonians lose money. The XAF is pegged to the euro at a fixed 655.957 FCFA = €1, so 1 USDT should sit roughly around the prevailing dollar value of that peg. When a P2P seller quotes 660–675 FCFA per USDT, the gap above the peg-implied rate is your real spread — compare three or four merchants before accepting, because in a thin market like ours that spread is the whole cost. Note this is XAF (Central Africa), not the XOF used in Senegal or Côte d’Ivoire; the two share the same 655.957 number but are not interchangeable.
For KYC, Bybit’s Standard Verification accepts the Carte Nationale d’Identité (CNI) plus a live selfie — have it ready before you trade. One last practical point: when you withdraw, choose TRC-20 (Tron), not ERC-20 (Ethereum). For the small transfers most of us make, TRC-20 costs roughly a dollar while ERC-20 gas can eat $5–$15 — painful on a 50,000 FCFA buy. Be honest with yourself about the legal side too: crypto sits in a grey area here, and BEAC has rejected building a dedicated framework, so there is no consumer protection if a deal goes wrong. Trade only with well-rated merchants.
