Welcome! I am Kojo - your Africa crypto guide. These are the articles our readers find most valuable. Start here.
  • ~540,000 Ivorians (about 1.9% of the population) own crypto (Triple-A) — the highest rate in this group
  • Diaspora remittances surged about 5x to US$1.77 billion between 2018 and 2024 (World Bank)
  • Mobile money rebounded into a GSMA “turnaround” case, led by Wave, Orange, MTN and Moov
  • The BCEAO has not made crypto legal tender, nor banned it across the WAEMU zone

Cote d’Ivoire has the highest crypto-ownership rate in this group of markets — about 540,000 people, or 1.9% of the population. As West Africa’s most advanced economy it draws migrants from across the region, and its diaspora remittances have surged roughly five-fold since 2018. With the CFA franc stable, the story here is money movement, not a currency hedge.

Why crypto adoption is rising in Cote d’Ivoire

Cote d’Ivoire is a mobile-money and remittances market. As the economic hub of francophone West Africa it attracts workers from neighbouring countries, and the money they send home has grown about five-fold since 2018. Because the CFA franc is pegged to the euro and stable, demand is driven by cheap transfers and digital payments rather than hedging a falling currency.

Mobile money has staged a strong comeback — a case the GSMA calls a “turnaround” — led by Wave alongside Orange Money, MTN MoMo and Moov. In 2025 the regional central bank, the BCEAO, switched on a zone-wide instant-payment platform linking every wallet and bank across the eight WAEMU countries. The BCEAO has warned about crypto and has not made it legal tender, but it has not banned ownership or trading. Most Ivorians fund crypto purchases straight from a mobile-money wallet.
