Key stats you can cite (free to use with a link)
- ~240,000 Zimbabweans (about 1.4% of the population) own crypto (Triple-A)
- Inflation has swung between 31% and 779% a year over eight years (IMF / World Bank)
- The new ZiG currency lost ~49.8% against the dollar in its first year (2024–25)
- Diaspora remittances hit a record US$2.45 billion in 2025 — nearly 4× since 2019 (RBZ)
Zimbabwe is the textbook case of crypto as a survival tool. After years of hyperinflation — prices have swung between 31% and 779% a year — and a new ZiG currency that has already shed about half its value, many Zimbabweans treat dollar-pegged stablecoins as a way to simply keep their savings from melting. Officially only about 240,000 people (1.4%) hold crypto, but that sits on top of one of the most mobile-money-ready populations in Africa.
The numbers

Why crypto adoption is rising in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is the clearest currency-hedge story on the continent. The Zimbabwe dollar was scrapped in April 2024 and replaced by the gold-backed ZiG, which still lost roughly half its value against the US dollar within a year. With the local money this unstable, USDT and other dollar stablecoins have become a way to hold value and to receive the record US$2.45 billion in diaspora remittances that flowed in during 2025.
For years the authorities kept crypto in a grey zone. That changed in 2026: under Statutory Instrument 99 of 2026, virtual asset service providers must now register with the Financial Intelligence Unit and secure operational approval from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe or the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe. Stablecoins are tolerated for remittances but banned for domestic payments, as the RBZ guards against a full dollar substitution of the ZiG. Most Zimbabweans still trade peer-to-peer, funding wallets from mobile money — used by 63% of adults — or from cash US dollars.
