Kenya is one of Africa’s most active crypto markets, with about 6.1 million owners (10.7% of the population). Uniquely, adoption is high even though the shilling was the strongest-performing African currency in 2024 — proof that Kenya’s crypto story is about payments and remittances, not currency collapse.
The numbers

Why crypto adoption is so high in Kenya
Kenya runs on mobile money. M-Pesa is the backbone of everyday payments, and most traders fund exchanges straight from their mobile wallet rather than a bank. The Virtual Asset Service Providers Act 2025 brought exchanges under the oversight of the Capital Markets Authority and the Central Bank of Kenya. Because the shilling held its value in 2024, Kenyan adoption is driven by remittances and low-cost payments — a different engine from Nigeria or Ethiopia.
