The numbers

Why South Africa is different
South Africa is the continent’s institutional market. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) licenses crypto asset service providers, so the major global exchanges operate locally under authorisation and banks such as Absa participate. Owners skew high-income and highly educated — 83% are aged 18–44 and 46% hold a degree. Funding runs through the rand via PayShap and instant EFT, and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) treats crypto under capital-gains or income tax rules.
