Nigeria is Africa’s largest crypto market and one of the biggest in the world. Around 22 million Nigerians — about 10.3% of the population — hold crypto, and the country recorded $92.1 billion in on-chain value in the year to June 2025, ranking #6 globally on the Chainalysis index.

Why crypto adoption is so high in Nigeria

Nigeria is the clearest case of crypto as a currency hedge. The naira lost about 43% of its value against the dollar in 2024 and inflation ran near 33%, so stablecoins like USDT have become a way to hold dollars. Most trading runs through peer-to-peer and fintech wallets — OPay, PalmPay and Moniepoint — after NIN or BVN verification. The Securities and Exchange Commission now licenses Virtual Asset Service Providers under the Investments and Securities Act 2025.
