Why mobile money and crypto matter in DR Congo

DR Congo is a mobile-money story at huge scale. Four operators — Vodacom (M-Pesa), Airtel Money, Orange Money and Afrimoney — serve 29 million active users, with Vodacom and Airtel together holding more than 80% of the market. For a vast country with thin bank coverage, the phone is the account.

Crypto rides those same rails. Exchanges increasingly let Congolese users fund accounts directly from M-Pesa or Airtel Money, with Congolese-franc support expanded through 2025–26, and stablecoins are used to cut the cost of cross-border trade and remittances. A draft Digital Assets Act, submitted to parliament in late 2024, would require crypto firms to register, run KYC and report suspicious activity — a shift from no rules toward a supervised framework.
